HORTAN PLAINS (Sri-Lanka)

Hortain plains is a very beautiful place situated in Central highlands of Sri-Lanka. It is rich in biodiversity and many of the species found here are endemic to the region. There are variety of flowers, insects and plants can be seen there. Hortain plain is the one of tourist attracted place ever in Sri-lanka. 03 major rivers in Sri-lanka as Mahaveli,Kelani and the Walawe are fulfilled by the Hortain plains. This region always in cooled and small rain in always. Earlier this place called "Maha Eliya Thenna" but in british period, the British governor of  ceylon "Sir Robert Wilmot-Hortain" visit to sri- lanka in 1831, from his destiantion he travelled to visit that place after that he observed there were gems located on this place, after that he reveals that place as Hortan Plains. 


The Horton Plains are part of a larger system that covers plains and forests, including the Agra-Bopath, Moon Plains and Elk Plains. From 1831 to 1948 it became a sambar deer hunting ground. Elephants and wild boar were also hunted. During this period the low slopes were cleared first for coffee and then for tea plantations.  Threats are including for this area as gem mining, logging, collection of plants for ornamental purposes, poaching, poaching and traffic. Some Sambar deer have died after eating polythene cubs that blocked their food routes and visitors have been banned from bringing them into the polythene park. Introduced penicillin grasses especially Sambar benefits.












Hortain plain is a very valuable peace of region to Sri-lanka because 03 major rivers are fulfilled with it. In this area lot of various medicine plants, flowers, tress are growing so as a human we must protect those areas from harmful things.
