Avukana Buddha Statue

 

Avukana statue is located in Avukana which is situated in North central province. It is closed to Kala wewa. This very famous statue in Sri lanka because this is the tallest standing statue. This statue, over 40 feet (12 m) high, was carved in the 5th century with a large granite face.

It was carved with a large granite face, but is not completely detached. A narrow strip of stone remains on the back of the statue, which attached to the stone face and supports it, However, the pavement of the Lord Buddha, carved in the shape of a lotus flower, is carved separately and placed under the statue.


The height of the statue is 38 feet 10 inches (11.84 m) and the total height of the Avukana statue with the pavement is 42 feet (13 m). [4] [5] The statue was housed in a large house or shrine, and parts of its walls still stand. The structure was made of brick and stone and was 74 feet (23 m) long and 63 feet (19 m) wide.

The Avukana statue has some influence on the Gandhara School of Art as well as the Amaravathi School of Art in India. The robe is tight, the body shape is clear, and its appeals are clearly and delicately engraved. According to the tradition of the Buddha statues in Sri Lanka, it is above the left shoulder and the right shoulder is bare. The body of the Buddha is straight and the left hand holds the robe over the left shoulder. The right hand is raised to the right shoulder and the palm is facing left. This location is known as the Aziza seal, a variation of the Abhaya seal.
